The mobile application serves as a technology that stores and retrieves memories for this project. Since a mobile phone is convenient and most people carry it every day to everywhere. Thus it is a perfect device to relive their memory segments. 

Prototype 01. encoding memory

One of the best indicators of emotion is facial expression, by training a Teachable Machine of my facial expression category into Happy, Angry, Suprose, and default, I was able to embed this code into P5.JS. Inside the P5.JS, I have set up the interface to respond with the emoji based on my facial expression.

Takeaway

I enjoyed making Reminiscent / Remind very much. It is a very personal and complicated project that involved both coding, psychology, and design.

Memories are the essence of our life, Reminiscent / Remind studied, researched, and experimented on how digital plays in our memory, how would digital augment our ability to remember and recall good memories? How can we connect digital and physical space to work beyond the senses?​

A Journey of Memory

Important moments of memory begin to fade over time, is there a way to preserve them longer? This platform intends to augment our autobiographical memories. The platform is designed to record memory through digital media, and then overlay on the physical environment to unfold the past. The form of this project combines an emotional detector with AR [augmented reality] technology to create a tool that relives our intangible emotions, stories, and moments of our life.

I have been moving around since very young and lived in multiply cities. Whenever I go back to the cities I lived in before, the streets change so much that I don't recognize them anymore. I feel like part of me has vanished with the reconstruction of the community and neighborhood.   

As technology become an essential part of our life, it was able to document, store and retrieve the memory that seems to be lost...

In the simplest form, the process of memory is the category into three steps: encoding, storing, and retrieving. 

The research was a huge part of this project, especially on how humans process memory. To understand how and what memory are important to people's everyday life. I spend a great amount of time researching in three directions: the process of memory, digital impact on memory, and user research/self-reflecting on how we remember.  

Digital plays a huge role in how we remember information today. It's important to understand the advantage and disadvantages of using technology to assist the process of remembering.

User research forms a great part of my research. Observing myself and interviewing other people helped me to understand what and how information is being remembered by them.

how does it work. 

Detect and record memory through wearable devices.

The project is taking the form of a mobile application with a wearable device.

Memory segments are triggered by location.

Participants revisit the memory through mobile devices.

5 in 5 prototype.

Prior to the final design. I use a 5/5 [5 lo-fi project in 5 days] prototype exercise to play around with different possibilities of this project. There are different ways and methods to approach, and it is essential for me to understand each method's advantage and disadvantage

Next part, again I used p5js, after the facial expression is triggered, the camera starts recording and downloading to local files. Each recording becomes a memory segment, Each segment is within 90 seconds.

Prototype 03. retrieving memory clips

The last part is to retrieve the memory segments. When a participant is Physically Nearby a memory segment that is stored in the first place, will trigger the app and provide the user an opportunity to a journey of recollecting memory.

One of the main aspects of this project is Metadata. Every recorded video includes metadata of location, time of day, time of year, types of emotion, etc. Each of them becomes a memory segment that will be triggered if the user is nearby.
