Redesign of BT Transit

BT Transit is an existing bus transportation mobile application that allows Virginia Tech students to travel on and off-campus. The purpose of this project is to discover how VT students commute daily and redesign current BT transit, therefore, providing a smooth and stressless college experience.

I started studying exisiting BT Transit application. The goal is to understand current features and the user flow of each feature.

01. Studying Existing App

#1 Map is the default page. It includes all current running bus and represented by different colors.

#2 Alert page are usaully blank only when there is changes in bus routes.

#3 Plan A Trip is the most used feature based on later research. User can type in current location and destination to find routes and plan trip accordingly.

#4 Routes contains all bus routes in Blacksburg and each bus’ stops and routes.

Before being able to determine pain points within the application, it was necessary to first understand exactly how users interact with the app, and the situations & scenarios in which they use it.

I checked on both Google Review & Apple Store review to find common issue people encountered when using current application.

02. Gathering Feedback

User tend to repeatedly checking and confirming trip information such as bus route, stops and time of arrival. In addition, from interview, I also found users get really confused by different bus route and arriving time.

​"I always check multiple time during and before my trip to school, because I have trouble to remember the exact time, stop and bus routes are always confusing."

Compare traveling back home, user stressed that is more important for them to arrive class on time. In addition, during interview, couple user complained that when there is changes in bus route, there is no live update of the trip.

"The most important thing for me is time. I want to know the exact time I arrived to destination, so I won't be late for my classes""


User often have a specific set of buildings they attend every semester 

5 out of 6 user mentioned before they plan trip, they check school calendar for campus building name and time of class. Then plan their trip accordingly. Each semester, they usually have 5-6 specific campus buildings for different activity and class.

During interview, I found there two two main type of traveling: 1. Travel from apartment/dorm to school. 2. Travel between campus building during class time. 

To better understand the target users, I generated persona for these two type of user.

The new plan trip feature gives students a shortcut of choosing classes to plan their trips. Based on their school calendar, they can plan trips up to the whole semester.

After the version 1.0 user testing, I noticed students only use one hand during their trip. The initial search bar location was hard to use especially with one hand. Therefore, by placing the search bar at the bottom and increasing the size of the touch target for easy accessibility.

Reduce steps when planning trips

To optimize user planning trip experience, the most important aspect I have to consider is- How long does it take for a user to plan a trip. 

During Version 1.0, it takes a user 6 steps in total to complete planning a trip. Setting up notifications and confirming trips were required interactions. However, for the more experienced users, it's important to provide shortcuts to speed up their experience. Thus, I decided to reduce it to 4 steps by adjusting setting up notifications and confirming trips interaction as an option rather than required steps.

Minimize Memory Load

"Hokie" calendar feature decreases user input when using BT Transit. In order to optimize the planning trip experience, how the calendar is displayed and interacted by the user becomes very important. 

During Version 1.0 user testing, some of the participants were confused by the abbreviations of class. They point out it takes a few seconds for them to recall details of each course. Therefore, minimizing the user's memory load by providing direct information is important

To speed up the planning trip process, I also added a call to action button "start trip" for planning a trip. And "Repeat the trip" shortcut to repeat the same trip for the entire semester.

Results & Impacts


The interface visual Redesign emphasized information clarity, consistency, and hierarchy to provide a clear and easy-to-understand UI. Testing users stated that
"love the new interface because each function is straightforward, the displayed information is comprehensive,  and the overall style is very aesthetically appealing."


The redesign of the User experience for planning trips resulted in a much faster process. The new user flow for planning a trip will only take 30 seconds, compared to the initial user flow which takes about 1 min. 

"I love the idea of planning trips through the school calendar, it would save me so much time and I don't have to search for the correct building name anymore!"


At Virginia Tech, BT Transit is one of most used transportation tool for student to travel on and off campus. Yet many students has struggled using both bus transportation service and mobile application. My goal for this project is to understand how user travel on & off campus with the current bus transportation system to improve student's life at VT by redesign the BT Transit Mobile Application.
